Fundamental Fly Tying

Fundamental Fly Tying with instructor Dennis Gamboa. In this 5 week introductory course, students will learn the in’s and out’s of fly tying.

Instructor Dennis Gamboa has been teaching professional fly tying classes for over 10 years. From tiny trout flies to large epoxy saltwater patterns, Dennis is a true master of the art of fly tying.

We have 2 start dates for this course:

Start Date 1: October 18th, 2009 to November 15th, 2009 (the class runs every sunday for 5 weeks).
Start Date 2: November 22nd, 2009 to December 20th, 2009 (the class runs every sunday for 5 weeks).

Time: 10AM - 12:00PM

Note: All tools and vices are supplied by the shop.

NIGHT 1
Introduction to fly tying. Vise setup, proper hook placement & hook anatomy. Bobbin setup and thread choices. Starting off: thread positioning and bobbin techniques. Learning the Half hitch. Mastering the whip finish. Tying methods using commercial tying techniques. Each night will also cover fishing techniques for patterns.

Woolly Bugger: Applying chenille, tailing materials, counter ribbing and using flash materials. Palmering of hackles, whip finishing and head cement application

Marabou leach/damsel - time permitting

NIGHT 2
Carey Special (peacock version)
Tying methods: twisting peacock herl, measuring, applying a collar hackle (soft hackles). Ribbing with tinsel.

Scuds: Tying methods: using dubbing, shell- backs, half hitch, wire or monoribbing. Picking out dubbing.

NIGHT 3
Partridge Nymph: Tying methods; tapering bodies and ribbing . Wing case techniques and applying beards or throat hackles.

Gold Bead Hare's Ear: Tying methods: using beads, tapering bodies, ribbing with oval tinsel, dubbing loop methods for thorax. Applying turkey quill wing cases.

NIGHT 4
Mickey Finn: Tying methods: tinsel bodies, ribbing, buck-tail wings, & finishing heads

Rolled Muddier: spinning deer hair, spinning and more spinning. Applying winging methods with mallard and forming deer-heads.

NIGHT 5
Tom Thumb: Proper measuring and folding is our main focus.

Dark Cahill: Standard Catskill Dry Fly Methods: hackle fiber tails, winging methods, and dividing wings. Dry fly hackling and dubbing.
